The National Identity Management
Commission (NIMC) plans to use smartphones
to take an account of all Nigerian citizens and issue them their National Identification
Numbers (NIN).

NIMC want to issue NINs with smartphone to avoid chaotic situation similar to issuing BVNs by the CBN The National Identity Management Commission responsible for issuing the National Identification Numbers (NIN) announced plans to develop the procedure of enrolmentfor receiving NIN numbers via smartphones.
The date of the mandatory use of the NIN was shifted from September 1, 2015 to January 9, 2016. The extension of the term follows the directive by Muhammadu Buhari to harmonize all biometric datatbases of Nigerian citizens between all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, including the CBN, FRSC, FIRS, PenCom, INEC, NHIS and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, (FMARD).
To avoid the situation experienced earlier by the CBN in the process of issuing the Bank Verification Number (BVN), when thousands people massively turned out to meet the CBN deadline , the NIMC has concluded plans to provide pre-enrolment services on smartphones.
This will ensure that people of all ages in the next couple of months can start their enrolment using their smartphones, before they proceed to NIMC Enrolment Centres to complete their enrolment.
The NIN is an 11 digit number assigned to an individual upon successful enrolment into the National Identity Database. It represents the unique entry of a personal information in the National Identity Database. Once issued to an individual that number cannot be used again.
“ The public are greatly appreciating that ‘the
NIN and not the Card, is Your Identity’ ,” told Abdulhamid Umar, General Manager, Corporate Communications, NIMC in an official statement.
NIN is a non-intelligent set of uniquely assigned numbers to individuals upon successful enrolment, which consists of recording of an individual’s demographic data and capture of 10 fingerprints, head-to-shoulder facial picture and digital signature that are used to cross-check existing data in the National Identity Database to confirm there is no previous entry of the same data.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) representative described the advantages of the new national identity card. Apart from many other things, it may also be used as an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card anywhere in the world where there is MasterCard logo. Besides being just an ID card, it is also a cash card, so the holder can withdraw money in any place. Moreover, especially within the West African sub-region, it soon would become possible to travel with this card only, passport-free.
